Portals, Mixed Media Collage

This series, Paths, is a reflection on a personal history of time and place. It is an attempt to discover and respond to images, people and emotions from the past. The work was completed over an extended period of time and involved several steps. The first step was to create a body of work in printmaking techniques, specifically etching and monotype. These prints were then torn up and collaged onto printmaking paper with india ink, acrylic paints and medium. In some cases, the collage covered and entirely obliterated a monotype or a ghost, causing the initial image, which has disappeared from the viewer, to remain as the emotional underpinning of the work. This process of tearing down and building up is layers deep in some areas, while in others, the original paper ground shows through. After these initial layers were dried, pastels and more acrylics were applied. The idea of creating and destroying is integral to the pieces, both technically and emotionally. The process becomes the text of the piece.
